Immersing in Mandarin

learn chinese pinyin

While I like to do things online, as far as learning Chinese is concerned, the most effective way of learning the language is still immersion.

To immerse yourself in Mandarin, put yourself in an environment where Chinese is the primary tool for communication.

In this way, you get to hear how the language is spoken, and respond to it in a spontaneous way.  It is ‘live pinyin online’.  There are ample opportunities for you to make mistakes and grow.  Practice makes perfect. When you are forced into the situation where you’d have no choice but to open your mouth and speak Mandarin most of the time, the learning process becomes proactive.  This is extremely powerful. Some of the best cities to immerse in Mandarin  are Beijing and Shanghai.  Other cities to consider are Taipei and Singapore. It will be more effective if you can sign up a language course when you are there.

What is Chinese Alphabet?

Is there something called Chinese alphabet?

To the Chinese speakers, the description sounds odd.  The Chinese language does not use alphabet for writing, it relies on the characters that are pictograms.

In fact, Chinese alphabet is a convenient way of describing Hanyu Pinyin.

Hanyu pinyin, often known as Pinyin, is a notation system for the official Chinese spoken language — Mandarin.

It uses the English alphabet.

Do note, however, that although the English alphabet is used, the system is meant for the Mandarin sounds.  It does not follow the English pronunciation convention, and many letters do not have corresponding English sounds.

In other words, you cannot convert English to Chinese pinyin indiscriminately.

To have a preliminary understanding of the system, try this Quick Guide to Pinyin tutorial.

Do not simply jump from English to pinyin.  It requires re-learning.

Pronounce Chinese – Learn Pinyin

hanyu pinyinIf you want to pronounce Chinese in the proper manner, learn Pinyin.

Pinyin is a Chinese phonetic system.  To put it simply, it is a system that transcribes the Mandarin sounds.  Having learnt it, you would be aware of the initials and finals of Mandarin, enabling you to grasp the pronunciation of every Chinese word you learn.

It is, therefore, an essential tool for learners of Mandarin who want to enunciate the language clearly.

Pinyin is Known in full as Hanyu pinyin.  It is a Romanization system. Although not the only system around, it is one that is the most widely recognized.

The system was endorsed by the Chinese government and began to be taught in schools in 1958.  Since been, it has been used by many organizations all over the world, including ISO.

It is hard to learn pinyin without listening to sounds. For that reason, I’ve compile for you a video tutorial.

It is meant to give you some preliminary understanding of the system.

The tutorial shows you how each sound is enunciated, and is a good way for you to start learn Mandarin.

Pronounce Chinese Words

pronounce chineseWhile Chinese may sound foreign to you, it actually shares similarities with English.

Among the similarities are the ways some of the vowels and consonants are voiced.  In Chinese, they are known as finals and initials.  For example, the ways to pronounce  ’b’ as in ‘bed’ and ‘p’ as in ‘pen’ are pretty similar between the two languages.

There are, of course, sounds that are very different nevertheless.

For example, ‘can’ and ‘women’ are pronounced in a totally different manner.

Learn to ‘manage by exception’, and you will master the Mandarin pronunciation far quicker.

Learn Mandarin or Cantonese?

Among the Chinese dialects, Cantonese is the one that is very widely spoken outside China.

It is the major tongue in Hong Kong, and a major means of communication among Chinese in many China towns in the West.

If you are thinking about learning Chinese, should you learn Cantonese or Mandarin?

My suggestion is you should learn Mandarin, unless you are willing to confine yourself to speaking to people in a specific dialect group.

Learning Mandarin is definitely the way to go.  Not only is Mandarin the official spoken language, it is the common spoken language for all Chinese, regardless of dialect backgrounds.

Furthermore, many people who speak Cantonese can also speak Mandarin.  So you are not really losing much if you know only Mandarin.

In fact, many younger Chinese do not speak dialects at all, and are conversant only in Mandarin.

You will not go wrong if you choose to learn mandarin, rather than dialects.

How Different Chinese is as a Language?

If you are about to learn Chinese, and want to learn the language quickly, it is important for you to find out how different the language is from yours.

This can help you to become more targeted in your learning strategy.

With the knowledge, you’ll be able to identify the areas that you have to pay more attention to. Going by the 20/80 rule – you will get to see the results of your learning effort quicker.

As the 20/80 rule goes, if you can manage the most important 20 percent in whatever you to, the remaining 80 percent will take care of itself.

Let’s use English as an example, how different is English from Chinese?

If you are an English speaker, what do you have to know about Chinese in order to learn the language more effectively?

To begin with, Chinese is clearly different from English in three important aspects: sound, tones and learning of characters.

Sound

First, let’s look at the sound.

The ways Chinese pronounce words are rather unique. While there are sounds of the Chinese language that are pronounced in similar ways like English, such as ‘b’ as in ‘bed’ and ‘p’ as in ‘pen’, there are many others that are pronounced in a very different way.

The words with pinyin (the Chinese phonetic system) ‘can’ and ‘women’ are good examples. They not pronounced in the ways that English speakers are familiar with. Specifically, they are pronounced as something like ‘chan’ and ‘war-men’.

Tones

Second, it is important for you to know that Chinese is a tonal language.

When you speak English, you may change the tone of a word freely, in order to render more emphasis or convey emotion.

When you speak Chinese, you’re not allowed to do that. Changing the tone of a syllable in Chinese can change the meaning of the word — sometime thoroughly. In can convey a totally different meaning, resulting in serious misunderstanding.

The Chinese language consists of many dialects. Among them, Mandarin is the one that you are likely to learn, as it is spoken by almost every Chinese. Mandarin, in this case, has four tones.

Using the syllable ‘ma’ in Mandarin as an example. When the syllable is pronounced in the first tone, it could mean ‘mother’. When it is pronounced in the second tone, it could mean numb. When it is pronounced in the third tone, it could mean ‘horse’. When it is pronounced in the forth tone, it could mean ‘scolding’.

Can you see how different a change of tone can change the meaning of a syllable in the language? So if you want to learn Chinese effectively, master the tones to the extent that you can use it as a second nature.

This is critically important — if you do not want to be misunderstood.

If you can get the tones right before you speak the first word in the language. This will put you in the right mental mode, and save you a lot of trouble for re-learning later.

Characters

Third, you should recognizing the Chinese characters as far as possible. Unlike English, which is written somehow phonetically, there’s no way for you to guess the sound of a Chinese character.

The Chinese words are not written in the alphabet, and you’ll need learn the character one by one. This, of course, can be a great challenge.

You can use a different approach to recognize the Chinese characters. One of the effective ways to do this is to appreciate the Chinese character as pictures, as I always get my students to do.

If you can focus on the difference of Chinese as a language, you will know where the major challenges are, and come out with a strategy — which is specifically yours — to learn the language quicker.
