Asking Questions in Chinese – Yangyang Lesson 7

In this lesson, you’re going to learn how to ask a question in Chinese by using the miracle word – ma1 吗.

The way to form questions in Chinese can be quite straightforward.

Although there are many ways to do it, if you know how to use the word ma1 (吗), you would make things a lot easier. This is because by using the word ma1 吗, you can simply turn a statement in Chinese into question.

For example, when you are making a statement ‘you are a student’, you would simply say ‘ni3 shi4 xue2sheng’.

When you are asking the question ‘are you a student’ in Chinese, you do have to recreate a sentence. What you have to do is simply to add the word ‘ma’ (吗) at the back. So the question is:  ni3 shi4 xue2sheng ma?’.

It is so simple!

It is, therefore, important for you to learn the word in Chinese when you learn Mandarin.

Learn Chinese in 5 minutes.

Of course, this is not the only way to ask questions in Chinese, and you’ll learn more about how it is done in the future lessons. Using this method, however, can already help you to ask the questions you want on many, many occasions.

Great lesson! But fyi: there is a spelling mistake at ~1:42. You misspelled “student” and wrote “studnet” :)
