7 days Mandarin pronunciation with Xaoqian – lesson 1

Your 2 friends to learning Chinese pronunciation – Pinyin and Tones

Many people think that learning Chinese is difficult.   it can be a lot easier — if you approach it correctly. Learn some basic characteristics of the Chinese language from Xiaoqian here.

Is learning Chinese difficult?

I would say yes — even when it can be discouraging to you.

The Chinese language is difficult for several reasons. At the top of it is of course the use of Chinese characters. The characters are pictograms, and they have to be memorized one by one. There is also the pronunciation, which is quite different from the English language. Not only are there sounds difficult to pronounce, adding to the difficulty is the use of tones.

In this series of lessons, Xiaoqian is teaching you the basics Chinese pronunciation.  In this lesson, she’s introducing to you two friends that are helping you with your learning of Mendarin – pinyin and tones.

I tried learning mandarin and I just couldn’t grasp it. I must be an idiot or something lol. The tones are what killed me. My brain just doesn’t operate that way. I think I may go back to learning Russian. I have a much easier time with the slavic languages.

I’m glad you explain things clearly, I have wanted to take up a new language for a while and mandarin seems logical to me considering china has been growing steady and becoming a majority in where I live.

  38. bintuae1 April 1, 2013 at 9:51 pm #

i wish u were my chinese teacher cuz my teacher speaks english with hard accent and she would repeat simple things over hundred times, go over very very slowly even if i mentioned it! :(

  39. DarkAngel2512 April 1, 2013 at 10:08 pm #

You are a really good teacher. Very good breakdown of pinyin and I liked the story with your teacher. Very funny :)

  40. aznprodigy17 April 1, 2013 at 11:01 pm #

…It was a joke mate. Go easy.

  41. tzacanel April 1, 2013 at 11:17 pm #

translated these symbols mean: “You are already too late”
It’s funny that you included the “wink symbol” 😉 because now I’m unsure whether you are supporting or opposing the mistreatment of the Philippines by their Chinese neighbours…that aren’t even close enough to claim the land and are doing so based on maps that are thousands of years old…and also on the fact that they have the bigger army and better weapons.

  42. tzacanel April 1, 2013 at 11:59 pm #

Al Capone once said: “You will get a lot farther with a kind word and a gun rather than just with a kind word.” It’s not your fault China has ‘the bigger gun’ in this scenario. Time could be better spent on personal development for the purpose of organizing a defence rather than complaining. Time could also be better spent on acquiring wealth so that you can escape your current situation and if you are indeed afraid for your safety. If, in the end, you are cornered then fight back until death.

  43. elly2910 April 2, 2013 at 12:41 am #

actually, ur right ^^! support ur thinking LOL

  44. qweasdewq88 April 2, 2013 at 1:19 am #

Partly, you are correct and you have a fair point in that statement. My point is, I believe that China is the next world superpower and they will overtake the US at some point. If you are aware on what’s going on, China is claiming a portion of our country as their own land. They resent peaceful negotiations about the matter, in fact they already built establishments on that said land without the consent of our government. By law, we are the right owners of the land. I’m from the Philippines

  45. aznprodigy17 April 2, 2013 at 1:56 am #

    你已经太迟了。;)

  46. tzacanel April 2, 2013 at 2:14 am #

i think what you meant to say was:

remaining competitive in our global economy is important to me and i am worried since i don’t speak mandarin., as a result; i have taken initiative to learn mandarin so i can capitalize on China’s last few decades of respectable economic growth rather than fear and resent it, especially since it’s out of my control.

  47. Derek Jupiter April 2, 2013 at 2:42 am #

Pinyin is only gonna make troubles. If you’ll associate each word with a character, pinyin and the tone it has, you’re gonna learn really slow. The scientific approach to this language has caused many problems. The intonation is important, but you should not concentrate on it too much or you’ll never speak it. Just try to repeat after audios and it’ll come. Then learn the hanzi characters. If you’ll learn how to pronounce 我, you won’t need to know this “wǒ”. Good luck.

I think the best way to learn Chinese is to learn speaking and listening first like the way kids learn a language. Then learn reading and writing.

    我(wǒ)认(rèn)为(wéi)想(xiǎng)尽(jǐn)快(kuài)学(xué)汉(hàn)语(yǔ)的(de)最(zuì)好(hǎo)办(bàn)法(fǎ)是(shì)先(xiān)学(xué)说(shuō),听(tīng),再(zài)学(xué)读(dú)写(xiě)
